LG Optimus 3D launched – Glasses-free 3D and ‘Tri-Dual’ architecture

The LG Optimus 3D is now finally officially launched and it will be available in Europe first before it comes over to the United States as the AT&T Thrill 4G.

The big to-do about the LG Optimus 3D is that it does glasses-free 3D and it does it pretty well. Games and videos pop out of the screen when you have this mode enabled and you’ll be able to use the two 5-megapixel cameras to record 3D in 720p HD. You can also record in 1080p HD if you want to stick with that 2D jazz.

The specs on this Android 2.2 Froyo device haven’t changed much since we first saw it. The company is pushing its “Tri-dual” architecture: it has a dual-core TI OMAP processor (that does really well in benchmarks), dual-channel and dual-memory. The device also comes with 3G, GPS, WiFi, Bluetooth and the other goodies you’d expect.

Enough with the marketing fluff, how does this thing stack up in real life? Well, in our full review, Blake found that this is definitely a bleeding edge phone and that means users will be getting awesome hardware but may be turned off by some of those early-adopter bugs.

Despite its downfalls, the Optimus 3D is still a great phone even without it being a 3D handset. If you’re not a power user and would only use 3D lightly, you may manage to have better success with the battery on the handset, and we can imagine that LG is working on optimizations.

I could go on and on about the Optimus 3D, but to spare you from another nine paragraphs, I’ll just tell you this: In its current form, I have no intention whatsoever to purchase a 3D-enabled handset, no matter who makes the thing. I just don’t need it. However, it in now way should stop you from grabbing this hot handset, because LG got a lot right with its first 3D phone.

Are you jazzed about this one?
